After many years in higher education, I decided on a career change and embraced the world of horticulture. I have gained the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture and taken a Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture at Derby college’s Broomfield Hall, which covered all aspects of garden planning and creation.
My aim when designing a garden is to provide the client with something that exceeds their desires and expectations. In addition I also believe that it has to incorporate these basic principles.
Resilience The weather is becoming more unpredictable, in recent years we have seen periods of excessive rain and also extended droughts. Gardens need to take this into account. The planting needs to be able to cope with these contrasting extremes.
Sustainability Both plants and landscaping materials should be from sustainable sources and preferably sourced as locally as possible.
Ecologically sound Wildlife and ecosystems should be considered in any design. Not only for the general benefit but a healthy eco-system will lead to a healthier garden.
Profile
Whilst at Broomfield I had the chance to design, project manage and help build, with my fellow students, a show garden for the BBC Gardeners' World Live event at the NEC. The garden was awarded a Silver Merit.
After this I embarked on the next exciting chapter - the starting of a garden design service - Carleen Osborne Garden Design.
