While studying for my Level 3 Practical Horticulture qualification at Broomfield College, we were given the opportunity to design and build a show garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.
Under the guidance of course lecturer Mike Baldwin and working alongside my fellow students, I designed and project-managed the build of the garden. It was a fantastic opportunity to put the horticultural and design skills developed during my studies into practice, while gaining valuable experience of designing and delivering a garden in a real show environment.

The Restoration Garden.
The inspiration for this garden was the work of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust in restoring Wingfield Station.
The design tells the story of the station’s transformation through two contrasting areas. One represents the building in its derelict state, with wild, naturalistic planting reflecting its neglect and abandonment. The other is more structured and contemporary, representing the restored station and its renewed purpose.
The station façade forms the backdrop to the garden and reinforces this before-and-after theme. One side depicts the building in its neglected state, with boarded-up windows, a damaged roof and graffiti, while the other represents the restored building.
The contrast between the two halves of the garden reflects the remarkable transformation of Wingfield Station and the work undertaken to preserve it for the future.
