Planting design

I consider the conditions within each garden, including soil, aspect, moisture and exposure, and select plants for their suitability as well as their appearance. I aim to create planting that provides interest throughout the year.

Planting is an important part of my approach to garden design.

I can create planting schemes for new borders or redesign tired, overgrown or underperforming areas, selecting plants according to the conditions in your garden and the look you want to achieve.

The result is a planting scheme designed specifically for you and your garden rather than simply a collection of plants that look good together but may not thrive in your situation.

What’s included

I will visit you at home to see your garden and discuss your requirements, ideas and budget. This initial consultation usually takes around an hour and gives us an opportunity to talk through what you would like to achieve and how I can help.

The consultation is free of charge and with no obligation.

Following the initial consultation, I will send you a project outline and fee proposal, setting out the proposed scope of work and the associated fees for you to consider.

Final planting plan

This includes measuring the areas to be planted and assessing the existing conditions. I will note the plants that are already growing successfully, identify which existing plants are to be retained, and assess factors such as light, shade and aspect. Where appropriate, a soil sample may also be taken to help inform the planting choices.

Following our consultation, I will develop an initial planting concept based on your requirements, the character of the garden and the site conditions.

This will include a draft plan showing the overall planting layout and character, together with a selection of suggested plants. The concept gives us an opportunity to review the overall approach and make any changes before the detailed planting plan is produced.

You will receive a scaled planting plan showing the position of all proposed plants, together with any existing plants to be retained. This is accompanied by a colour plant identification sheet and planting schedule, detailing plant names, quantities.

If required, I can also provide a month-by-month plant maintenance plan setting out the key tasks needed to keep the planting looking its best throughout the year.
