Ireland’s largest festival of gardening, food and sustainable living

Designed to inspire novice gardeners and DIY enthusiasts, this garden, demonstrates how creating an attractive, practical garden is within everyone’s reach.

Emphasising a maker-friendly approach, the design employs budget-friendly, readily available materials, straightforward construction methods, and a planting scheme underpinned with locally available plants. It integrates practical everyday elements, including a discreet retractable drying line and efficient storage for tools, while supporting environmentally responsible choices in both materials and use.

The zig-zag arrangement of slightly raised walkways guides movement through the garden. The boardwalks and deck are constructed from reclaimed scaffolding boards, charred and sealed to provide a distinctive durable finish. Screens are constructed from easy to source, affordable roofing battens, while bespoke furniture is handmade using standard section timber.

This garden could be for a typical newbuild suburban plot or the renewal of an existing gardens.

Demonstrating a Show Garden design that is achievable for beginners, this is a garden that inspires the response, “I can do that!”
